Proportion and Balance: A Guide to Measuring and Arranging Your Outdoor Furniture

Proportion and balance: A guide to measuring and distributing your outdoor furniture

Practical guide to measuring your terrace and planning the space before buying

Introduction

Buying outdoor furniture is an exciting process… until the big question arises: And what if it doesn't fit? At De Tropen®, With our experience advising on projects of all sizes since our exhibition in Málaga, we know that a spectacular terrace depends not only on the design, but also on the proportion.

Measuring a terrace, balcony or garden It's not just taking the metro and writing down numbers. It’s about understanding how the flow of people moves, how space is lived in, and what margin you need for your furniture to be comfortable and functional. In this guide, we explain step by step how to measure your exterior so that your new furniture fits perfectly.

1️⃣ Define the use: The basis of measurement

Before installing the metro, you must be clear about the purpose of your outdoor area. The type of furniture determines the necessary walking space:

  • Dining Area: It requires extra space to remove the chairs (about 60 cm behind each one).

  • Lounge/Relax area: Prioritize the depth of the sofas and the distance to the center table (40-50 cm).

  • Solarium area: It needs free space to move around the sun loungers and open the parasols.

2️⃣ Measures the usable space (The most common error)

Do not measure only the perimeter of the wall from one end to the other. For real planning, you must take into account all the architectural elements that take up space:

  • Pillars and columns.
  • Fixed gardens or low walls.
  • Tour of opening doors and windows.
  • Inclines, steps or drain grates.

Gold rule: Usable space is that area where the furniture can be placed flat and allows for movement around it.

3️⃣ Respect the pedestrian zones (Smooth traffic)

A piece of furniture can fit mathematically, yet still be uncomfortable if it blocks the passage. De Tropen® We recommend following these minimum distances:

  • Main hallway: Between 80 and 90 cm for walking without difficulty.
  • Secondary corridor: Between 60 and 70 cm (distance between furniture).
  • Space behind a chair: At least 60 cm to be able to get up from the table comfortably.

Professional trick: Use carpenter’s tape to mark the outline of the furniture on the floor. Walk around the terrace; if you feel that the furniture is visually too large, it is too big.

4️⃣ Do not forget the vertical dimension

Many users measure the ground but forget what is above it. The height is critical if you plan to install:

  • Bioclimatic Pergolas: They must remove beams, protrusions from existing roofs or awnings.

  • Side umbrellas: They need height and a free turning radius around obstacles such as streetlights or tree branches.

  • Lighting and fans: Make sure they do not interfere with the passageways once they are installed.

5️⃣ Common mistakes you should avoid

Avoid these classic mistakes so that your investment in brands like 4 Seasons Outdoor o Hartman be perfect:

  1. Do not measure access: Make sure that the furniture (especially one-piece sofas or large tables) fits through the elevator, stairs, or the front door.
  2. Ignoring water and light connections: Do not plug in any appliances that you might need for your electric barbecue or outdoor stove.
  3. Forgetting the visual proportion: A huge sofa on a small balcony takes up space, even if it fits by inches.
